Penn Badgley, star of Netflix series You, has opened up on the ‘worst audition’ of his life.
The actor is well known for his role as Joe Goldburg in You, Dan Humphrey in Gossip Girl and Woodchuck Todd in Easy A. Now, he’s opened up about auditioning for a film when he was younger and getting awful feedback.
Speaking on the Podcrushed podcast, he discussed the time he auditioned for the 2006 film Eragon. Penn was talking with Ed Speelers – who did play Eragon in the film – when he revealed that he had gone out for the lead role too.

However, Penn ended up losing out on the role and was given feedback by the casting director. He said: “The feedback from the casting director was to my agent – and I have never gotten this before or after in my life – and it was warranted, but it also shows how long I’d already been doing it.
“And I was like, so..I was not remotely prepared. I hadn’t…I was like this is a story about a dragon – little did I know how popular dragons were gonna become.”
He added: “I just probably gave one of the worst auditions in my life, least prepared, and the feedback that the casting director gave – I don’t know what the tone was, if it was admonishing or if it was – she said ‘he was so unprepared it seemed arrogant’.”
Penn’s show You was recently renewed for a fifth and final season following a successful run on Netflix. It follows Badgley as Joe Goldberg, a murderous romantic who becomes dangerously obsessed with the women he's interested in dating.
The most recent series saw him travel to London to stalk his ex-girlfriend Marienne, played by Tati Gabrielle, only for his attention to be grabbed by Kate, played by Charlotte Ritchie.
