Screams were heard last night as a man was shot close to a pub.

At around 10.30pm last night (Friday February 2), a man arrived at at a Merseyside hospital with a gunshot wound to his ankle after a shooting in Litherland. The injury is not life threatening and he is not cooperating with police inquiries.

A cordon was in place this morning at the Cookson Bridge Pub on Gorsey Lane, close to the Leeds-Liverpool canal. Detectives were seen walking along the canal while scientific support took pictures of the pub. One local who was there last night told the ECHO that he had “never heard anything like it” as he recalled women screaming and the sound of glass smashing. He added that a policeman was stationed under the bridge all night long.

Merseyside Police are appealing for information following the incident and have urged anyone with information to get in touch. Chief Inspector Phil Thompson said: “The investigation is in the very early stages as we seek to establish what has taken place and who was involved.

“We have a large police presence in the Litherland area to carry out a number of lines of enquiry and I would encourage people to come forward and tell us what they know.

“There is no room for guns on the streets and we will do everything we can to find the person or people responsible for this incident and bring them to justice.”

Friday evening was a busy one for Merseyside police as, aside from the Litherland shooting, a man in his 50s was stabbed in the chest in Garston, and a balaclava-wearing man stormed into a Kirkby house and fired a gun before fleeing.
