Wirral homes evacuated with 75m cordon in place and roads closed due to ‘gas leak’ – RECAP

A number of homes were evacuated on the Wirral last night and this morning (Friday, July 28) and a 75m cordon was been put in place, amid reports of a ruptured gas pipe.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said the evacuation and cordon around New Chester Road in Bromborough are "a precaution" following reports of a gas leak. Merseyside Police has said it is "currently dealing with an incident in the Bromborough area" and that it will "update further once residents can return home".

The gas leak was first reported at 9.36pm on Thursday evening and four fire engines were in attendance. North West Ambulance Service and Cadent Gas are also at the scene.

Road closures were in place at New Chester Road/Allport Road and New Chester Road/Woodyear Road and members of the public were being asked to avoid the area.

Shortly before 1am, a police spokesperson said on Twitter: "Following the incident in Bromborough all residents can return to their houses. Thank you for your understanding and assistance. said all residents could return to their homes."

Emergency services are currently attending an incident in Bromborough (Thursday, 27 July) and a number of properties are being evacuated.

Firefighters from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service were called shortly before 10pm to a report of a ruptured gas pipe and Merseyside Police have put a number of road closures in place whilst the incident is being dealt with.

Merseyside Police Officers,supported by staff from Wirral Council, are evacuating local residents as a precaution.

Cadent have been called out to assess and rectify the situation.

Road closures are in place at New Chester Road/Allport Road and New Chester Road/Woodyear Road. Diversions are in place and motorists are advised to avoid the area.

Statement from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service

Merseyside Fire & Rescue Service is at a junction involving New Chester Road and Allport Road, Bromborough CH62 6AS, following reports of a gas leak. Crews were alerted at 9.36pm and on scene at 9.44pm. Four fire engines are in attendance.

A number of properties have been evacuated as a precaution and a 75m cordon has been put in place. Cadent, Merseyside Police and North West Ambulance Service are also in attendance.

The incident is ongoing and there are road closures in place at New Chester Road/Allport Road and New Chester Road/Woodyear Road. Please avoid the area.
