Two baby formula powders sold in the UK have been recalled due to fears they could be contaminated with dangerous bacteria.
The government's Food Standards Agency have reported that manufacturer Reckitt Benckiser – whose products include Nurofen, Gaviscon and Durex – has urgently recalled the two formula powders as they could contain Cronobacter sakazakii. Reckitt has taken the "precautionary step" of recalling Nutramigen LGG stage 1 and stage 2 Hypoallergenic Formula powders.
Both products are foods used for special medical purposes for infants. The products are mainly prescribed but are also available without a prescription. Cronobacter sakazakii is a type of bacteria that can cause illness, primarily among infants younger than two months old, as well as those who are born prematurely, have weakened immune systems, or are of low birth weight.

Symptoms caused by Cronobacter sakazakii usually include fever and diarrhoea, and in severe cases may lead to sepsis or meningitis which include symptoms in infants including poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, jaundice (yellow skin and whites of the eyes) and abnormal breaths and movements.
Cronobacter infections are rare, however they can be deadly for young infants and for those with weakened immune systems. Reckitt is recalling the above products and have contacted all stores and pharmacies supplying these products. The company has also issued a recall notice to its customers.
A spokesperson for British-Dutch company Reckitt said: "At Reckitt, we are committed to the highest level of quality and safety, and the health and safety of infants is our highest priority. As a precaution we are recalling the batches of the Nutramigen LGG Stage 1 and stage 2 set out in this notice due to an isolated overseas sample of the product testing positive for Cronobacter sakazakii, whilst we continue to conduct a thorough investigation.
"In the meantime please do not use the batches of the products below and return them to the pharmacy that dispensed them to you." The products being recalled are regulatory batch codes ZL3F7D, ZL3FAA and ZL3FDM, all of which have an expiry date of July 1 2025.
Elsewhere, a popular children's lunchbox item has been urgently recalled from ASDA due to fears it may contain unsafe metal. The supermarket chain has requested customers return the ASDA own brand fruit juices, made by Refresco Beverages UK Limited as they possibly pose a major health risk to children.
The FSA has recalled six multi-pack juice drinks, which are ASDA Orange Juice From Concentrate, 100% Pure Apple Juice From Concentrate, Just Essentials Orange Juice, Apple & Blackcurrant Juice Drink, Apple & Mango Juice Drink and Apple & Pear.
