Experts have warned a common dog walking habit could be damaging for your pet.
The UK has been hit with a miserable summer so far as a yellow weather warnings was in force across Merseyside yesterday. A vet has urged dogowners to be vigilant in the wet conditions as it could bring about issues for your four-legged friend.
Dr Linda Simon said pet owners should not allow dogs to drink from the puddles that have formed from heavy rainfall. She said: "While dogs love to stop and drink puddle water, it is best not to allow this.
"Rats and mice can urinate in stagnant water, leading to the spread of Leptospirosis. Though your dog should be covered for Leptospirosis if up to date with their vaccines, they are still at risk of contracting the disease.”
The RSPCA says Leptospirosis is a disease causing bacterium. It added: "Lepto causes fever, lethargy, increased thirst, vomiting, bloody diarrhoea and jaundice. In severe infections dogs develop kidney and/or liver failure and will often die."
Experts at TrustedHousesitters advised dogowners to bring fresh water on the walk to give to your dog to avoid this issue. It added: "Rather than letting your dog lap up stagnant water, take fresh water and a portable bowl on walks.
"Ensure your dog drinks as much fresh water as possible to avoid them guzzling down anything they shouldn’t.
