Top woodland walks around Merseyside to enjoy over autumn

Grab your big coat and take a stroll through one of Merseyside's gorgeous well-kept woodlands with our guide to autumnal walks.

The region boasts a varied, colourful and lively array of options perfect for a Sunday morning walk or for the more athletic of us looking to get our steps in.

Some areas will take you through serene pathways filled with flora and fauna whereas others will have you battling against pretty tough terrain. No matter your preference, there's no shortage of stunning walks to enjoy.

Below, we've compiled a handful of woodland walks perfect for the autumn weather.

Formby Pinewoods

Formby Pinewoods

This is one for squirrel lovers as the loveable critters can be found here in abundance. It is a good place for finding wild snowdrops in the late winter and fungi in the autumn.

From the broadleaf and pine woods to the sand dunes, wanders can even take a stroll through crop fields and see how a spring vegetable is grown in Formby.

Big Wood Runcorn

Big Wood is designated as a Local Wildlife Site with an eclectic mix of broadleaf and exotic tree species, a wealth of wildlife and a rich and varied history. The wood is predominantly broadleaf with oak, birch sycamore, willow, alder, rowan and cherry tree.

Visitors will also be able to see squirrels, foxes and much more wildlife when exploring Big Wood. In the spring, areas of the wood become filled with bluebells and it makes for some beautiful scenery.

Upton Meadow Millennium Wood

Upton Meadow Millennium Wood

Upton Meadow offers a range of ecologically important habitats and is a well-used amenity and recreational resource for local people. It’s a small patch of only about 10 acres and it takes just over 20 minutes to walk around.

If you’re looking for a quiet walk with plenty of fresh air then Upton Meadow is for you.

Delamere Forest

Delamere Forest in Cheshire is the ideal place to go for a walk. It's a large popular forest park with good facilities and many well-surfaced paths.

Whether you’re looking for a hike, a leisurely stroll or to walk somewhere with a view, it has something for everyone. Delamere also has a lot of wildlife including the tortoiseshell butterfly, spotted woodpecker, white-faced darter dragonfly and much more.

Storeton Woods

Storeton Woods on the Wirral.

Storeton Woods includes a remnant of the old tramway used for transporting stone from the quarry to Bromborough to be transported by barge to be used in the construction of buildings all over Birkenhead and Liverpool.

It’s a tranquil haven for wildlife in an urban landscape. It may even have been home to dinosaurs too – fossilised prints of a raptor-like dinosaur was found in the 1920s and are now housed in the Liverpool and British Museums.

Otterspool Woodland

Otterspool Woodland is part of the park and it runs along a sandstone bank so that it allows for walking or cycling at different levels with a surfaced path at ground level.

The 13-hectare woodland and paths has been planted with wildflowers including snowdrops, daffodils and blue bells.
