A man flew into a violent rage and attacked three people after a woman "got the better of" his girlfriend in an argument.

Jordan Boardman, 31, punched the woman in the face after she beat his girlfriend, Lauren Murphy, in a verbal row which had broken out at a house party in the early hours of March 23 2023. He then turned his anger on another couple, Lewis Mellit and Georgia Tynan, beating them both with a metal baseball bat and vandalising Mr Mellit's BMW car.

He appeared at Liverpool Crown Court today, September 11, where he pleaded guilty to assault causing actual bodily harm, common assault, possession of an offensive weapon, and criminal damage.

Prosecutor Martyn Walsh said the explosion of violence began when a woman, who was not named, "got the better" of Miss Murphy. Boardman then got involved, and punched the woman in the face.

This resulted in Mr Mellit and Miss Tynan deciding to leave the property in Mr Mellit's car. Boardman announced he was "going to get a knife", went into the kitchen, and emerged with a metal baseball bat which he used to attack Mr Mellit by beating his arms, legs and body. Miss Tynan, who had taken refuge inside the vehicle, got out of the car to protect her boyfriend, and was also attacked.

Boardman, of Sutherland Road, Prescot, went on to damage Mr Mellit's car by hitting it repeatedly with the baseball bat, smashing the back window.

Mr Mellit said the incident had affected him financially as he had to take unpaid time off work to recover from his injuries, and the damage to his car meant the cost of his insurance had increased. His social life was also affected as he felt "scared to go out again in case he was further assaulted".

Miss Tynan said her mental health had deteriorated "massively" and that she felt anxious leaving the house. She said: "It was traumatic and frightening to see Jordan in such a rage and I wondered what he might do."

Mike O'Brien, defending, said: "A more positive aspect of the defendant is his ability to work hard. He's a trained plasterer. He's fully employed and earns £750 a week. He uses that income to support his partner and young child, and they are expecting a further child in February next year. He wishes to maintain the support he gives to his partner and child and the thought of going to prison and not being there fills him with dread."

He urged the judge, Recorder Daniel Prowse, to consider a suspended sentence, adding that Boardman "acknowledges the need to address his behaviour and his alcohol use."

But the judge said: "It's said on your behalf you have strong mitigation. I disagree with that. In my judgement, this offending is too serious to mark with anything other than immediate imprisonment."

He sentenced Boardman to 12 months in prison. As he was taken to the cells, a member of the public gallery said: "He'll only do half anyway. He'll come out on licence."
