Police cordoned off a major road after a scrambler bike rider collided with a police car.

Around 7pm tonight (May 30), police received reports of a large group of men on scrambler bikes riding dangerously on a playing field with children nearby. The group were then seen riding on the wrong side of the road on Longmoor Lane, Fazakerley.

A police vehicle responding to the reports was later in collision with one of the scrambler bikes on County Road. Merseyside Police closed County Road between Eton Road and Andrew Street just after 8pm.

The rider sustained a minor injury to his leg and has been taken to hospital. Two men, aged 28 and 23 years, were arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving and theft of a motorbike.

County Road, Spellow Lane and Barlow Lane remain closed to traffic while police deal with the incident. At least half a dozen police cars including matrix vehicles, police dogs and unmarked cars were at the scene along with an ambulance.

An ambulance left the scene under police escort with blue lights flashing shortly after 9pm. A police car with damage to the front bumper remains at the scene next to a motorbike, which is lying in the pavement.

Groups of schoolchildren gathered around the cordon as police worked inside the scene. Eyewitnesses said they saw a boy being given medical attention at the scene as people gathered around to help.

One shop owner said: “I heard something had happened and when I looked out I saw police and a lad lying in the street and people shouting. I hope he is okay.”
