Scousers have been remembering one thing they did constantly as a kid they were 'lucky' to survive.

This week a driver was stopped by police after two children were spotted travelling in his boot. Police pulled the VW car over on junction 20, finding seven people inside the five-seater car with cushions and bedding in the boot, where the kids were riding.

The driver was reported for three offences – specifically carrying two passengers with no seatbelts and using a vehicle for an unsuitable purpose.

Driving with passengers without a seatbelt is illegal and drivers can be fined if they or someone in their car is found to be riding without a seatbelt.

However, despite the clear danger attached, for many people who grew up in the 1970s, 1980s, and even the 1990s and 2000s, riding in the back of the car was something of a rite of passage. Many recalled memories of riding in the back of the car or the van in their younger years, on their way to holidays or on days out.

On Facebook, Pamela Kerry said the story made her 'laugh and reminisce'. She said: "As a kid loads of us used to pile in the car on a Saturday morning to go the Abbey Cinema at Picton Clock and going the caravan travelling on the M6.

"We were everywhere: boot, sitting on each others laps – where there was a space was a kid. So dangerous looking back but fun times."

Lynne Gordon called it the 'best part of a kids life'. She said: "Being in the boot was the best thing – an amazing adventure as a kid. What is wrong with people nowaday?"

Natalie Walton said: "Welcome back to the 70s/80s. The boot and footwells made your car into a bus.

"I never went in the boot but did squish in a footwell on occasion, and travelled many times in the back of a van sitting on the wheel arch holding on for dear life."

Pauline Buxton said: "We never had a car when we were kids so anytime relatives took us out we sat in the boot of the car or on knees. No compulsory seatbelt in those days either. Lucky we survived."

Gillian Shields said: "We would go camping as kids and four of us would all be sitting in the back of the car on the camping gear, no seat belts, fun times."

Angie Donougher remembered going on holiday with her three siblings 'always in the boot'. She added: "No seatbelts in the 70s. [We] slid all over the place as no carpet down and always ended up with grease in our hair from bumping into the hatchback opening mechanism."

Caroline Ann McGregor Caz said: "My dad's mate used to always have vans when we where kids and I remember this yellow Ford he had with three seats at the front and none in the back.

"We all used to pile in and sit on the floor, the lucky two sat on the wheel casing. It used to have a little flap door on the floor and if you lifted it, you could see how fast you where going because it looked like the road was moving past really fast.

"Surprised we didn't fall through it. Good times."

The ECHO approached Merseyside Police for comment.

According to the Offence Code use on a road of a motor vehicle for an unsuitable purpose can carry a fine of up to £100.
