A group of people were seen gathering at the side of a main road after a woman was hit during rush hour this morning.

Merseyside Police confirmed a woman pedestrian was hit by a Renault Clio at around 8.30am today (Monday, February 6) near the junction of Walton Lane and Anfield Road. The woman was rushed to hospital with serious injuries and the road was closed for a number of hours while police investigated.

As police officers diverted traffic, people in the area told the ECHO how they had no idea what had happened until the afternoon. Michelle, who lives on Fountains Close near to where the crash happened, said: "I looked out the window about 8.30am and saw all the police and ambulances there. That's when they blocked the road off.

He said: "I got here about 12.15pm and there were police blocking the road. My nephew was hit at the crossing a few years ago and he’s now got plates in his head."
