Road closed after fire crews rush to blaze in flats

A road was closed after a fire crews rushed to the scene of a blaze on a block of flats.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service confirmed crews were called at 4.05pm following reports of an incident on Argyle Street in Birkenhead. Four fire engines were on scene at 4.08pm.

A spokesperson for the service said on arrival, crews were met with a kitchen fire within one of the flats of a three storey building, approximately 50cm x 15m.

The spokesperson added: "Four firefighters in breathing apparatus entered the property and the fire was extinguished shortly after. The electrics have been isolated and all persons have been accounted for. Crews are checking for fire spread but the incident has been scaled down to two fire engines.

"Merseyside Police are at scene to assist with traffic management. North West Ambulance Service are also in attendance as a precaution."

Merseyside Police confirmed they were at the scene "assisting the fire service" after being called around 4.15pm. The road was closed in both directions.

According to traffic monitoring network Inrix, the road closure was having an impact on traffic heading into Birkenhead. The report said: "Argyle Street in both directions closed, queueing traffic due to police incident from Grange Road East to A5030 Cleveland Street. The closure is affecting traffic heading into Birkenhead."

The road was re-open at around 6.30pm.
