Merseysiders have had their eyes on the sky this evening as a "strange" halo appeared around the moon.

Many people have taken to social media to ask about the circle that can be seen around the moon, with some halos photographing clearer than others. It's not just been seen on Merseyside, with people across the UK reporting the rare phenomenon.

According to Space.com the moon's halo, or lunar halo, is an optical illusion caused by ice crystals that cause a large bright ring to surround the moon.

It reads: "This striking and often beautiful halo around the moon is caused by the refraction of moonlight from ice crystals in the upper atmosphere."

Taking to X, formerly Twitter, one person asked: "I’ve never seen a moon halo before."

Another said: "Had to google what this was Moon looks like it has a ring of light around it, apparently it’s a moon halo, never seen anything like it, looks quite spooky but also pretty incredible."

A third added: "Moon halo tonight is crazy. I thought the world was ending."
