A coin collector has explained a rare 50p coin is worth up to 90 times its value.

The EU presidency inspired 50p piece is one of only 109,000 ever produced. It is dated with two years, 1992 and 1993, when the UK was president of the European Council of Ministers, and the Single Market was completed.

The coin was designed by Mary Milner Dickens and shows a conference table from above surrounded by 12 chairs, which illustrates the EU's Council of Ministers. An estimation by collector Crawley Coins puts the coin's value at up to £60, 120 times its value – as Mirror Online reports.

CoincollectorUK, has shared an explainer on the rare coin on its TikTok account and said the coin is more unique than the Kew Gardens piece. The collector said: "The dual date on this coin makes it unique, however, it goes for £40 – £45, which is significantly less than Kew."

The Kew Garden coin was released in 2009 to mark 250 years since Kew Gardens opened in 1759 and the Royal Mint estimate around 210,000 were made. It features the famous Chinese Pagoda at the Royal Botanic Garden on the tails side with the Queen's face as normal on the other.

It's always worth checking your change for some of the rarest coins in circulation across the UK. However, finding a Kew Gardens 50p coin doesn't necessarily mean you're about to make a fortune. A re-circulated version of the iconic coin was minted in 2019, as part of a celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 50p coin. As a much higher number of this coin was minted, it is considerably less valuable to collectors.
