Predicted snow could nearly be as bad as snow storm everyone remembers

This wasn't just a light dusting

Snow is predicted to fall in the UK this week with "cold arctic air" sweeping across the country from today.

The ECHO recently reported how there are weather warnings in place from today (Monday, January 15) through to Thursday, January 18, with ice and snow set to cause disruption. The yellow weather warnings are in place mainly in Scotland and the north west, including Merseyside and Manchester.

It comes as the Met Office and UK Health Security Agency issued a Cold-Health alert, urging people to check on elderly and vulnerable family, friends and neighbours amid the below freezing temperatures. Thick snow is expected in parts of Scotland, though Liverpool is also set for hail flurries, some snow, and icy conditions. More snow is then likely to fall on Wednesday and Thursday.

Exacta Weather forecaster James Madden reckons we could see snow right across the country. The Mirror recently reported how he said the snow risk is greater than any year since 2010. He said: "Over the next few weeks, there will be a high chance of snow with the risk higher than the same period over the past few years or indeed, since the big freeze of 2010.

As snow is set to fall on Merseyside, we've delved into the archives and taken another look back at the snowfall of 2010, which also happened to coincide with one of the busiest evenings of the year, the Liverpool ECHO previously reported. This wasn't just a light dusting, as parts of Merseyside were brought to a complete standstill by the snow. The weekend of Friday, December 17, 2010, saw large numbers preparing to celebrate the festive season, returning home to normal conditions in the afternoon only to find the ground covered with thick snow around an hour later.

This led to the inevitable transport chaos with train services delayed or suspended and issues continuing into the evening. With little or no public transport available, there was a last-minute scramble to find hotel rooms, large queues formed for taxis and roads were littered with abandoned vehicles while those who were at home were snowed in.

Many will remember seeing the city centre covered in snow – as seen in these photos from over a decade ago. To many, it looks picturesque and shows scenes of what we'd like for a White Christmas – but for others, it will bring back memories of chaos or inconvenience cause back then.

As the UK could see the 'worst snowstorm in 14 years' this week as freezing temperatures to grip the country, these photos may stir some memories.
