Potential date for reopening of Queens Drive after flood tragedy

A provisional date has been set for the reopening of a Liverpool road that has been closed since a flooding tragedy this summer.

Elaine and Philip Marco, aged 75 and 77, died after their car became submerged by flood water in an area of Queens Drive in Mossley Hill on August 26.

The area of Queens Drive that flooded, between its junctions with North Mossley Hill Road and Dovecot Road has been closed ever since the tragic deaths of the married couple.

A major criticism from those living in the area in the wake of the tragic incident was that there have never been flooding sensors or signage installed in a road that has flooded badly for decades.

Since the incident, Liverpool City Council has been on site, installing sensors and signs, which it says will enable the reopening of the major road in the new year.

The council's work has been delayed recently due to bad weather earlier this month, but it can now be completed with the sensors now being fitted.

They will then need to be tested over the festive period to make sure they are working satisfactorily. If all goes to plan, it is hoped the road could reopen in the early part of January.

A spokesperson for Liverpool City Council said: "We would like to thank residents and motorists for their patience and understanding while the work is ongoing."

An inquest into the deaths of Elaine and Philip Marco will take place in February 2024. Coroner Andre Rebello has previously said that there are crucial questions to ask of several authorities about the tragedy that unfolded in Queens Drive in August.
