"There were about 20 police cars and then someone was arrested. Then police came back tonight and put tape up again and told us not to come out of our flats while they investigate. I don't know if that means something bad has happened to the guy for them to come back out and cordon it all off again."

He is currently in a critical condition. A 40-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of s18 assault, assaulting a police officer, resisting arrest and criminal damage.

He remains in custody where he is being questioned by detectives. An investigation is underway and house-to-house, CCTV and witness enquiries are being carried out in the local area.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy McCourt said: “I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of Eaton Road at around 1am who saw or heard anything suspicious to contact us as a matter of urgency. I would also ask anyone who thinks they have captured something on their dash cam, doorbell camera or CCTV to get in touch as they may have information which is vital to our investigation.”
