Police hunt for CCTV of delivery driver hours before woman’s death

Merseyside Police have said they're keen to view any CCTV footage of a deliver driver in the hours before a 91-year-old woman was hit by a car.

Merseyside Police were called to Acrefield Road in Woolton at around 7.40pm on Friday, December 15, following reports of a woman being hit by a car. Once emergency services arrived at the scene they found a 91-year-old woman was hit by a silver Vauxhall Corsa.

Despite the best efforts of emergency services, she died at the scene. The driver of the car, a 52-year-old man from Liverpool stopped at the scene and was later arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and driving whilst unfit through drink or drugs.

He has been released under investigation whilst enquiries continue. As part of the investigation, Sergeant Simon Duffy is asking people in the Woolton area for any CCTV or dashcam footage of a 2010 silver Vauxhall Corsa.

He added he believes the driver was delivering food and is asking people in the area who ordered a takeaway earlier on in the evening, and noticed their driver was in a silver Vauxhall Corsa, to get in touch.

Sergeant Simon Duffy said: "This is truly a tragic incident and our thoughts and condolences remain with the woman's family. We are continuing to appeal for anyone who witnessed the collision or came to the assistance of the lady and provided first aid to come forward.

"We are also appealing to any motorists who may have been driving on Acrefield Road around this time and have a dash camera in their vehicle to contact us. I would be grateful if you could check your footage as soon as possible and contact our officers if you have captured something of significance.
"Footage or sightings of a 2010 plate silver Vauxhall Corsa, travelling from the Woolton Village direction would be of particular interest. I believe the driver was delivering food and I would ask anyone who received a takeaway delivery earlier that evening and noticed their driver in this car, to also make contact.
"If you witnessed this incident, captured it on dashcam or have any CCTV footage, please get in touch with our officers."

People on Acrefield Road said they were "shocked" and saddened after hearing about the incident on Friday. One added they they first knew something serious had happened when they saw emergency services on the road.

The man, who asked not to be named said: "I came back from work and blue lights were everywhere, police, ambulance, everything. There was tape all in the road and a white tent, I knew something serious had happened.

"I saw a woman had died the next day and thought how sad is that."

A woman living on Acrefield Road said: "It's such a tragic thing to happen on your doorstep. The road [Acrefield] is horrible to cross, people come flying from the mini roundabout.

"The road is awful, It's like playing chicken."
