Most children have now gone back to school after the Christmas end-of-term break.
If you have a three, or sometimes four-year-old, this time of year also means primary school applications for your little one/s are about to close. Mums, dads and carers will need to apply for a place ahead of their child starting reception in September 2024.
Most children start school full-time in the September after their fourth birthday, meaning they'll turn five during their first school year.

That said, it isn't a legal obligation, and children can actually start later, as long as they're in school by the September after their fifth birthday. Liverpool City Council, St Helens Council, Sefton Council, Wirral Council, and Knowsley Council all give a deadline for primary school applications of Monday, January 15.
You must apply through your local authority, even if you want your child to go to school in a different borough. For example, if you live in Wirral but would like your child to attend a Liverpool school, you should make the application via Wirral Council.
Parents and carers can apply for up to three primary schools, numbered in order of preference. Some schools (mainly faith schools) also ask you to complete additional paper forms that must be sent directly to them.
