Nine key sepsis warning signs in children all parents need to know about

Knowing the symptoms of sepsis could save your child from the life-threatening condition which claims the lives of 2,000 kids in the UK each year.

When caught early, sepsis is entirely treatable with antibiotics. But without urgent care, the condition can cause organ failure and subsequently, death.

Sepsis occurs when the body’s immune system – which normally helps to protect us and fight infection – goes into overdrive. It can lead to shock, multiple organ failure and sometimes death, especially if not recognised early and treated promptly.

The Sepsis Trust says the condition "does not discriminate" and can affect anyone. Here are nine key symptoms every parent should be aware of:

The Sepsis Trust says your child may have sepsis if they:

  • are breathing very fast
  • have a "fit" or convulsion
  • look mottled, bluish, or pale
  • have a rash that does not fade when you press it
  • are very lethargic or difficult to wake
  • feel abnormally cold to touch

The charity urges: "If you spot any of these signs, call 999 or go straight to A&E and just ask: 'could it be sepsis?”'

Children under five with sepsis can have different symptoms, including:

  • not feeding
  • vomiting repeatedly
  • not passing urine for 12 hours

If your child is under five and has any of these warning signs, the charity advises: "Call 111 or see your GP and ask: 'could it be sepsis?'"
