Plans have been submitted for a large new building at Jaguar Land Rover in Halewood as part of the company’s move towards all electric production.
The application is to build an automated storage facility spanning nearly 1300sqm next to an existing similar building and will be used to store body parts before being moved to the production line.
According to documents submitted to Knowsley Council as part of the planning application, the new structure will “allow JLR to increase its production capacity for new model lines” – specifically as the car giant gears towards only producing electric cars at the site.

The company announced in April its plans to go all-electric with a £15bn investment to aid the transformation. Halewood’s JLR plant will be its first all electric facility, with plans to commence production of an electric Range Rover at the site.
Planning documents submitted on behalf of the applicant state that it is not expected that the new facility will significantly increase traffic in the area as no net extra jobs are being created as part of the proposals.
The building will house four cranes to collect and position car bodies as they enter via a conveyor belt.
Locating the new automated storage facility next to the existing one will improve “operational efficiency” as well as “minimise visual impact” – although it is expected the new building, standing at nearly 30m high, would likely be visible to houses over 200m to the north and south of the site.
The application is currently open for comments and can be viewed online with a decision expected by November.
