A man was banned from driving after running over and killing a gaggle of geese.

Abraham Andemariam, of Asbridge Street, Toxteth, was driving on Omega Boulevard in Warrington on Saturday, July 15 when he was caught on CCTV hitting a number of birds with his car. Pictures circulated on social media shortly after the incident and showed a number of geese lying dead on the road.

The 31-year-old appeared at Liverpool Magistrates' Court on Monday, November 27 after he was convicted in a previous hearing. It was heard at least seven geese were killed and several were injured.

Andemariam was found guilty of seven counts of killing a wild bird – namely geese – driving without due care and attention, and using a motor vehicle on the road without a valid test certificate.

Police Constable Jim Clark at Cheshire police's rural crime team said: "This was a horrific display of arrogance, a lack of regard for living creatures and an extremely poor understanding of the responsibility that comes with the privilege of holding a UK driving licence.

"I would like to thank those who provided witness statements to this horrific incident, those who stopped at the scene and RSPCA Inspector Mr Geoff Edmond for his expertise in the subject matter."

Andemariam received a 12-week prison sentence, suspended for one year. He was also disqualified from driving for six months and ordered to carry put 50 hours of unpaid community work and a rehabilitation activity requirement.

A collection order was made for deductions from benefits, victim surcharge of £154 and court costs of £120.
