A man was being questioned today after a large-scale police presence in Southport.

At around 3pm Merseyside Police were called to an address in Shakespeare Street to detain a male following an alleged breach of a non-molestation order. Officers flooded the street as a large cordon was put in place well into the evening.

At the height of the incident, more than seven police cars could be seen inside the cordon, along with paramedics. Later in the evening, the cordon was scaled down, allowing cars to pass along Shakespeare Street, with a row of shops remaining sealed off.

A 34-year-old man from Southport was arrested earlier today on suspicion of a breach of a molestation order, harassment and burglary.

One witness told the ECHO at around 7pm: "They’ve been here about two hours. Around 15 police officers went down the alleyway but they’ve not come back out. There were sniffer dogs and two officers had riot shields.”

The man has been taken to a police station and remains in custody.
