M62 to remain closed ‘for several hours’ after serious crash – latest updates

The M62 is expected to remain closed 'for several hours' after a serious crash in the early hours of this morning (Friday, July 28). The motorway has been closed in both directions between J6 (Huyton) and J7 (Widnes).

National Highways first reported the incident at 12.41am. A spokesperson said: "The M62 in Merseyside is closed in both directions between J6 (Huyton) and J7 (Widnes) due to a serious single-vehicle collision.

"Emergency services including North West Motorway Patrol Group are in attendance. National Highways Traffic Officers are also on scene to assist with traffic management. The road is expected to remain closed for several hours."

Diversion Routes

Road users heading eastbound are advised to follow the hollow circle symbol on road signs:

  • Leave the M62 at J6 and at the roundabout take the 6th exit onto the A5300.
  • Continue on the A5300 to the A5300/A562 roundabout and take the 1st exit onto the A562.
  • Follow the A562 eastbound to the A562/A557 junction and turn left onto the A557.
  • Proceed on the A557 back to the M62 J7 roundabout and rejoin the M62 eastbound to contin ue your journey.

Road users heading eastbound are advised to follow the solid diamond symbol on road signs:

  • Leave the M62 at J7 and at the roundabout take the 2nd exit onto the A557 heading south.
  • Follow the A557 to the A557/A562 junction and turn right onto the A562 heading west.
  • Continue on the A562 to the A562/A5300 roundabout and take the 2nd exit onto the A5300 heading north.
  • Proceed on the A5300 back to the M62 J6 and rejoin the M62 westbound to continue your journey.
