Live updates as flooding causes major travel disruption in region

A number of train services are cancelled and motorways are disrupted after flooding in the region.

Avanti West Coast and Transport for Wales have both cancelled trains due to flooding with "major disruption" expected. Avanti updated its customers by posting on the social media platform, X, at 5.30pm on January 2, warning them that services between Chester and Crewe had been suspended.

The update read: "Due to flooding between Chester and Crewe, all lines are blocked. Please check your journey before you travel."

Transport For Wales has advised that due to flooding, it will not be running services between Chester and Shrewsbury.

Meanwhile on the roads, two lanes of traffic are closed on the M56 westbound at junction seven (Chester Road, Bowdon) due to flooding. Major disruption in Merseyside comes as a yellow weather warning for rain was put in place by the Met Office on Tuesday, January 2.

Flood alerts are also in place for the River Alt. The alert states that flooding could occur from Huyton to Hightown including, Kirkby, Fazakerley, Maghull, Formby, Aughton, Sefton and Lunt from 10am. People are being urged to avoid low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and not to attempt to walk or drive through flood water.

"Lots" of people outside Chester station waiting for rail replacement bus

One witness said there are "lots" of people outside Chester Station as they wait for rail replacement bus services.

They said: "Do you have any update on buses? A lot of us outside Chester Station now and no buses or staff."

Avanti replied: "They have been arranged, but we're waiting for more information. Once we know more the station team will make an announcement."

Several vehicles "aquaplaning" on standing water

Earlier this evening North West Motorway Police posted an update on the social media platform, X, warning motorists of the dangerous conditions in Storm Henk. The force said they had responded to "several incidents involving vehicles that have aquaplaned on standing water"

Two lanes of M56 closed over flooding

Traffic monitoring service, INRIX, is reporting two lanes of the M56 at junction seven (Chester Road) due to flooding.

An update read: "Two lanes closed and queueing traffic due to flooding on M56 Westbound at J7 A556 Chester Road (Bowdon)."

Avanti West Coast has confirmed a rail replacement bus service has been requested, but they do not have an estimated time of arrival.

11 Avanti and Transport for Wales trains cancelled

Avanti's journey planner is showing 11 trains between Chester and Crewe have all been cancelled including the 4.32pm, 5.32pm, 5.56pm, 6.54pm, 7.55pm, 8.23pm, 8.45pm, 8.55pm, 9.34pm, 10.30pm and 11.01pm.

'Major disruption' for Avanti as "all lines blocked"

A number of Avanti West Coast and Transport for Wales Trains are cancelled over flooding with "major disruption" expected.

The travel provider updated its customers by posting on the social media platform, X, at 5.30pm on January 2, warning them of all lines being blocked due to flooding.

The update read: "Due to flooding between Chester and Crewe, all lines are blocked. Please check your journey before you travel."
