Huge queues as traffic builds after police close main road

Drivers are being urged to avoid a main road as emergency services are in the area.

Merseyside Police are currently on Church Road in Litherland. The force confirmed there has been damage to a manhole which had been causing problems.

The manhole is near the junction with Hawthorne Road. Motorists are being urged to avoid the area while the incident is being dealt with.

Images taken by the ECHO show traffic is building in the area and long queues can be seen. A lane appears to be closed.

Arriva confirmed some bus routes have also been impacted. The service 52A will now omit part of Linacre Lane and Watts Lane.

They said: "Due to Police incident at Church Road Service 52A will operate via Hawthorne Road heading towards Netherton. Omitting Section of Linacre Lane, Watts Lane, Orrell Road and Church Road. Service from Netherton to Liverpool is normal route."

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police spokesperson said: "Officers are currently in attendance on Church Road, in Litherland, following reports that a damaged manhole was causing traffic problems near the junction with Hawthorne Road. Motorists are advised to avoid the area while the incident is dealt with."
