Health inspectors saw rat escaping at zero star takeaway

A takeaway in north Liverpool was hit with a zero food hygiene rating after an inspection earlier this year.

Amalfi Pizza in Priory Road, Anfield was inspected by Liverpool Council's environmental health team on February 6. Following the inspection the takeaway was hit with the lowest possible hygiene rating and told that urgent improvement was needed if it was to remain open and trading.

The ECHO has obtained a copy of the full inspection report from the council's visit to Amalfi Pizza. The report shows the business got the worst possible score for food hygiene and safety compliance.

The report states that the gas fired water boiler at the premises was defective so there was not hot water available for the washing of equipment and surfaces or for personal hygiene.

There was also no hand soap or clean, dry paper towels for the hand wash basin in the kitchen. It was noted that there was actually a large supply of soap available but it had not been decanted into containers to be used by staff.

Inspectors also found that the sewerage system beneath the backyard of the premises appeared to be blocked, with waste material flowing through a rodding eye into the back yard. A rat was also observed exiting the yard which inspectors believe was likely feeding from the waste material. The inspectors also found a dirty tin can opener with a worn blade.

The inspector's report stated: "There is a high risk of cross contamination occurring when no hot water is available in a food business. I would strongly advise that the business is not opened for the sale of food until the boiler is fixed."

The business was also advised to 'engage the services of a reputable pest control company to monitor and control pest levels, especially in the back yard.'

Amalfi Pizza has not been re-inspected since the February 6 inspection.
