Fed up flatmates using torches to get to the toilet as home cut off

A group of students are frustrated and angry after living without WiFi for over a month and with no electricity at all for a week.

The group of Liverpool John Moores students live together in a flat in Borden Court, which is a development in London Road behind the TJ Hughes Building.

The group of second years have been living in the flat since September but at the end of last month, things started to go wrong when their WiFi suddenly went off. Despite constant messages and calls to the building's owners and managers, they have been without working internet since that point.

As if this wasn't frustrating enough, last week the flat suddenly lost all power, with the electricity supply to the main living area and bathrooms cut out as well as the power sockets in their individual rooms. This situation continued for a week despite the student's best efforts to raise it.

One of the students, 19-year-old Matthew Ord said it has been an extremely frustrating period that has impacted their lives and studies.

Students Matthew Ord, Rosie Shawcross and Cameron Mitchell who live at Borden Court and have been left without electricity for a week and no wi-fi for a month.

He said: "The WiFi cut out over a month ago. As you can imagine it is not ideal when we all have lots of uni work to do. We have all been having to go to the library every day, but there is only so much time you can spend there, we have raised the issue with the building owners and managers many times but it hasn't been sorted."

He added: "Obviously things then got a lot worse when the electricity went. We had no power coming through the sockets for a week. We were having to use the torches on our phones to go to the toilet and move around the flat at night.

"It has all really got ion the way of our studies and everyone is just really fed up."

Borden Court is owned by X1 Lettings, but the company insists that the communal areas of the building – including the apartments and services such as WiFi, water and electrics are the responsibility of the block management company, which is Inspired Property Management.

X1 said it has been attempting to contact the management firm, particularly during the period that the electricity was off in the flat as they felt the students should be rehoused, but was struggling to get a response.

Matthew said he has contacted both X1 and Inspired during the problem period but feels he has been continually passed between the different companies. He and his housemates believe they now deserve some form of compensation for the prolonged issues they have faced.

He added: "We feel like we have been ignored and deserve some compensation."

Inspired Property Management was also contacted for comment.
