Research has found that one common vitamin could help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, thanks to its anti-aging properties.

According to various studies, vitamin C can massively improve the look of your skin.

Dermatologists also say it may help in preventing sun damage and improve the appearance of dark spots and acne. In scientific terms, vitamin C is known as an antioxidant, meaning it fights harmful toxins your skin can come in contact with, such as air pollution.

These kind of toxins, which are also called free radicals, can damage your skin. But by taking vitamin C or applying a topical vitamin C product, this could improve your skin's overall complexion and appearance.

In a study published in the National Library of Medicine, researchers found people who used a vitamin C formulation daily for at least three months improved the appearance of fine and coarse wrinkles on their face and neck – as well as improved overall skin texture and appearance.

In another study, experts said: "With respect to human skin, vitamin C is found at relatively high levels in both the dermis and epidermis of youthful skin. However, levels in the skin inversely correlate with age and exposure to ultraviolet radiation."

Using vitamin C for three months could boost overall skin texture and appearance

According to Harvard Health Publishing, Vitamin C may also help protect the skin from harmful ultraviolet rays when used alongside sunscreen. By blocking the production of pigment in our skin, vitamin C could also aid with reducing the appearance of dark spots.

As for acne, clinical trials have show vitamin C can help control sebum (oil) production within the skin thanks to its its anti-inflammatory properties. In one study, people who applied vitamin C twice a day reduced acne lesions more compared to placebo.

Good sources of vitamin C include:

  • citrus fruit, such as oranges and orange juice
  • peppers
  • strawberries
  • blackcurrants
  • broccoli
  • brussels sprouts
  • potatoes

In terms of beauty products, there are plenty on the market that include vitamin C, whether that be serums, creams or cleansers. Some examples include Superdose's Vitamin C C-Suite Rapid Action Power Brightener, which is available to buy on Beauty Pie for £16.50. The Body Shop is also selling a Vitamin C Skin Boost Instant Smoother for £18. Holland & Barrett has a Vitamin C + Hyaluronic Acid Serum for £12 too.

The best kinds to look out for are ones that include an active form of vitamin C (for instance L-ascorbic acid), has a strength of 10% to 20%, and a pH lower than 3.5, as this combination has been studied in clinical trials.

However, if you have sensitive skin or a known allergy any of the ingredients, consider conducting a patch test on a small part of your skin first, or consult your doctor before use. It may take up to three months of consistent use to see a noticeable improvement.
