Chester Zoo made the decision to close today as the country braces for 80mph winds due to Storm Pia.

The popular zoo posted on social media to let customers know it would be closed on Thursday, December 21, due to "high winds". It comes as the Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for wind which covers the majority of the country, including Merseyside, on Thursday.

The Met Office has warned that the gusts could cause travel disruption ahead of Christmas. Some loss of power, delays to public transport and large waves on coastal routes are also expected.

A spokesperson from Chester Zoo said: "It's going to be a bit windy out there tomorrow, so we’re going to have to keep the zoo closed on Thursday 21 December for the safety of our staff, visitors and the animals under our care. If you have booked tickets to the zoo for tomorrow then we’ve automatically extended them until the end of June 2024 (this includes pre-booked tickets as part of our ‘kids go free’ offer).

"You don't need to do anything, just turn up to the zoo anytime with your confirmation and enjoy your day! If you’ve booked on to an experience, school visit or Dine with Santa, our team will contact you directly."

The zoo also gave an update on the Lanterns and Light event they're due to run on Thursday evening.

The update said: "We’re keeping a close eye on the forecast and, thankfully, it’s predicted to be much calmer by tomorrow afternoon and so Lanterns & Light is currently scheduled to run as normal. Please do check back with us here at 12pm on Thursday 21 December for an official update.

"We’re really, really sorry for causing any disruption to your plans but we hope you understand. Our team of conservationists will, of course, be at the zoo making sure the animals are tucked up and cared for with their favourite treats.

"We are planning to be open as normal on Friday 22 December, but please check our website and social media channels for confirmation."

The ECHO understands the Lanterns and Lights event did go ahead tonight (Wednesday, December 20).

Winds of 45-55 mph gusts are expected here in the north west and Merseyside, with stronger winds possibly reaching 80mph predicted for far north and northeast of Scotland, including the Northern Isles.

The forecast for Liverpool states that it will be primarily windy until Friday, with winds perhaps touching gale strengths on the coast. It will be a mild night however showery rain is likely on Wednesday evening into Thursday.

The outlook for Friday to Sunday and heading into Christmas for Merseyside reads: "Mild with temperatures staying above average. Rain and drizzle at times, particularly persistent on west facing hills, however some drier spells are likely too. Windy with gales possible at times."

A spokesperson for the Met Office said: "Give yourself the best chance of avoiding delays by checking road conditions if driving, or bus and train timetables, amending your travel plans if necessary. People cope better with power cuts when they have prepared for them in advance.

"It’s easy to do; consider gathering torches and batteries, a mobile phone power pack and other essential items. If you are on the coast, stay safe during stormy weather by being aware of large waves. Even from the shore large breaking waves can sweep you off your feet and out to sea.

"Take care if walking near cliffs; know your route and keep dogs on a lead. In an emergency, call 999 and ask for the Coastguard. Be prepared for weather warnings to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office recommends staying up to date with the weather forecast in your area."
