The road is the primary route between Southport and Liverpool. Images taken at the scene by an ECHO reporter showed a heavily damaged taxi to the side of the road.
The back of the black cab appears to have taken the impact of the crash. Photos showed the passenger door on the right side of the car smashed in. The roof of the cab had also buckled upwards. A Toyota was also involved in the crash.
The ECHO understands the road was reopened around 3am.
