Best pictures as Katumba Halloween Carnival Parade takes over city centre

The parade made its way through the city centre on Saturday

Liverpool city centre was awash with people in costume as the Katumba Halloween Carnival Parade returned.

As Halloween falls on Tuesday (October 31), people flocked to town on Saturday. Among the main attractions was the parade, which is now in its eighth year.

It was brought forward due to the rain, but that didn't dampen spirits.

People took to the streets dressed as monsters, creatures and demons known as 'zonbi'. There was also a band of drummers who stopped on Bold Street to perform.

Rather than a conventional depiction of zombies, the parade's theme delves into the origin of the idea. The Kongo word for 'soul', 'nzambi', eventually transformed into 'zonbi' as enslaved Africans were taken to Haiti.

Through this, the Vodou religion emerged, combining African traditions with those from the Caribbean. The 'zonbi' theme symbolises the eternal connection between the living and the departed.

The carnival started on Bold Street and made its way through the city centre before a finale at Liverpool ONE. People lined the street to watch the parade go past.
