A hero driver emptied a bus and took a woman to hospital after she broke her shoulder.

Brenda Howard, from Childwall, had been out shopping with friends in the city centre on Wednesday, November 22. It was around 4pm when the 70-year-old decided to make her way over to Hanover Street to catch a bus home.

While trying to get a bus, Brenda fell and seriously injured her shoulder, but kind-hearted strangers stepped in to help Brenda who was in shock after the fall.

Speaking to the ECHO, Brenda's husband Ray, 69, said: "She fell onto her shoulder and broke it in two places. I don't know how she didn't pull her arm out. There were three, we think who were students who helped her, one with blue hair. They were fantastic.

"There was also an older lady, we think, keeping Brenda calm as Brenda had gone into a bit of shock. We think they were getting on the bus but they waited with her."

After seeing what happened, a hero bus driver "went into super mode" and asked passengers if they could empty the bus and took Brenda to the Royal Liverpool Hospital where two staff members took Brenda straight through to A&E. Brenda and Ray believe the driver was operating the number 79 service.

The couple also believed one of the students who helped was carrying a guitar with him. Ray said Brenda did not see the woman who held her up for a long time after falling. Ray said: "We have got to say thank you to everyone."

The couple are keen to locate and thank the people who stepped in to help Brenda. The 70-year-old is now resting at home and is awaiting to hear whether she will need an operation on her shoulder.

Richard Hoare, area director for Arriva North West said: “Every day, we hear stories about the amazing work our drivers do and this is another example of that. Our passengers are our community and they’re at the heart of everything we do. It’s great to hear this driver did the right thing and made sure Brenda got to hospital quickly and safely.

“We’re glad she was seen to and is on the mend and we’re grateful that she’s contacted us to find the driver. We will make sure the driver is thanked on her behalf and on ours.”
