Man fights for life after falling into canal

A man is fighting for life after being pulled from a canal.

The man was pulled from the water in Bootle after members of the public rallied round to help. Merseyside police said they were called to reports of concern for safety of a man on Thursday, June 15, at around 7.30pm.

Emergency services arrived at the scene, near to the Strand on Stanley Road, and found members of the public had already pulled the man from the water. Officers said he was rescued by people who had started CPR on him.

The man was taken to hospital in a critical condition, where he remained this morning. Police are not treating the incident as suspicious.

A spokesperson for Merseyside police said: "Emergency Services were on Stanley Road in Bootle following reports of a concern for safety of a man last night, Thursday 15 June. Just after 7.30pm it was reported that a man had fallen into the canal near the Bingo hall on Stanley Road and was rescued by a member of the public.

"The man was taken to hospital in a critical condition where he remains."
