The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has given a three day warning as time is running out for people who may be able to claim extra cash.

The government department took to Twitter on Tuesday to remind people they could also be eligible for a Cost of Living payment worth an additional £301 if they claim Pension Credit by Friday, May 19.

In a tweet from its official account, DWP said: "Three days to go: Don't miss out on the £301 #CostOfLivingPayment as a recipient of #PensionCredit – submit your application for Pension Credit before 19 May.

"Did you know, if you get Pension Credit you could also get help with the cost of new spectacles?"

Pension Credit tops up weekly income to a guaranteed minimum level of £182.60 a week for single pensioners or £278.70 for couples. It is a tax-free payment for those who have reached State Pension age and live in the UK.

"Income" includes:

  • State Pension
  • other pensions
  • earnings from employment and self-employment
  • most social security benefits, for example Carer’s Allowance

People may still be eligible for Pension Credit if they have not paid National Insurance contributions, have some savings or a small pension, live with their grown-up family, and/or own their own home.

And if you're eligible for Pension Credit and claim by May 19, you will also be entitled to the £301 Cost of Living payment.
