A man who battered his ex-girlfriend after she refused to take him back breached his suspended sentence by sending a sack of presents to her house.

Liam Brodrick, 26, was given a 16-month suspended sentence and banned from contacting his former partner in November last year after he pleaded guilty to assaulting her after rapidly downing "five or six" beers at her house. He asked her to take him back, and when she refused, he grabbed her hair and punched her repeatedly in front of their two-year-old son.

He appeared at Liverpool Crown Court today, May 16, after admitting to breaching the terms of his licence and restraining order.

The breach occurred in March this year, when Brodrick's ex was contacted by a mutual friend who asked if she could drop off some gifts at her house in Warrington. Later, a man she did not know turned up on her doorstep with a large bag of presents and told her "these are from Liam".

The woman said the encounter left her feeling "anxious" and "vulnerable", and that she no longer felt safe in her home. She said: "I'm scared to go outside as I do not know who might be watching me."

Brodrick, of Dean Crescent, Orford, claimed he did not know other people were not allowed to contact his ex-girlfriend on his behalf.

Mr Wilson, defending, said: "The defendant decided to send presents to his son on his birthday, and based on what he has done finds himself in breach of his suspended sentence."

He was given a six month prison sentence, suspended for 12 months, and was ordered to carry out an additional 20 hours of unpaid work.

Judge Stuart Driver told him: "This is your last chance. If I see you again I will impose the two suspended sentences consecutively to each other. I'll send you to prison for 22 months. Don't let me see you again or you know what will happen."
