Eerie pictures show streets in Liverpool City Centre in complete darkness following a power cut.

SP Energy Networks received multiple calls just before 7.25pm on Thursday, January 19, reporting widespread blackouts in the L1 postcode following a power cut. Dozens of postcodes, which are homes to hundreds of people and businesses, were plunged into darkness with TV, wifi, lights, cookers and even water being cut off.

Many people living in flats on Duke Street said their lights started flickering just before the blackout. As people went out into the street to see what was going on, the only lights many could see were on the front of cars as street lights were also off.

One woman, who asked not to be named said: "I was cooking some pasta and everything suddenly went off. I thought it was just our flat at first but then I heard people shouting outside that there had been a power cut.

"It was carnage as cars couldn’t get in or out of the car park. Tesco had to close and all the staff were stood around waiting for the power to come back on.”

Salt House Tapas on Hanover Street tweeted to say they needed to close due to the power cut. They confirmed that would hopefully be back tomorrow (Friday).

A man living in a flat on Duke Street said: "I was watching TV with my girlfriend and everything just clicked and went off. We tried the fuse box and then looked out the window and everything was dark.

"We came out into the street really confused, everyone else was there or sticking their heads out of the window to see what had happened. Some of the lights have come back on now but not everyone's."

The majority of issues in L1 were sorted by 9.30pm, as planned, with some properties still being affected in Madison Square, Henry Street, Cornhill.

A spokesperson from SP Energy Networks said: "There is a power cut in the L1 postcode area of Liverpool, affecting properties in Madison Square, Henry Street, Cornhill and surrounding streets. Restoration is taking longer than expected because of ongoing investigations by our engineers on site to locate and repair the fault and our team are now working to get your electricity supply back on as quickly and as safely as possible by 11.30pm.

"If this information changes we will update you where possible, we apologise for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience."
