These photos tell the story of the week

Headlines this week were dominated by the Grand National as thousands of eager racegoers descended on Aintree Racecourse for the three days of the festival.

The main event was won by Corach Rambler but we think all those who came out dressed in the brilliant finery and wonderful garments the Grand National is known all over the world for were winners as well.

Away from the festival there has been sad news this week. At the start of the week the body of a man was found in Salthouse Dock and then on Thursday a man was killed after being hit by what is believed to be a stolen Audi, taken during a previous burglary.

The driver fled on foot and a police tent was spotted in a garden in Morgan Mews, Netherton. These are the photos that tell the story of the week.

  1. Body of man found in Salthouse Dock – Sunday 9 / Monday 10

    Police confirmed the body of a man had been found in the Salthouse Dock on Monday after a large emergency service prescence was spotted at the site. North West Ambulance Service confirmed the man was dead on the scene. An effort is now underway to contact his next of kin.

  2. Cannabis farm found after fire tears through three-storey home – Tuesday 11

    A cannabis farm was found at a house in Wallasey after a fire tore through it. The blaze was believed to have been started intentionally. A man in his 60s was taken to hospital with injuries to his arm. Police are currently appealing for anyone who might have any information to come forward.

  3. Boat raised after it sank to the bottom of Canning Dock – Tuesday 11

    Cathy Roberts' sold her home years ago to buy her boat the France-Hayhurst which sank in Canning Dock at the start of the year. Cathy said she "won't give up on her" after a successful operation to raise the boat. The boat will now begin a lengthy and expensive restoration process as Cathy says she wants to restore it to all its former glory.

  1. HMS Mersey arrives back 'home' in Liverpool – Wednesday 12

    The HMS Mersey arrived back "home" in Liverpool as it was to be awarded the Freedom of Sefton. The ship is one of the busiest in the Royal Navy's fleet, averaging a total of 220 days at sea. Today (Sunday) members of the ship's company will join councillors to march the streets of Sefton led by a military band.

  2. The Grand National begins – Thursday 13

    The world's most popular horse racing festival began once again on Thursday with the first seven races of the three days. Plaudits and racegoers flocked en masse on Thursday, dressed in some of the brilliant outfits the festival is so well known for.

  3. Police tent after man dies after being hit by 'stolen' Audi following burglary – Thursday 13

    On Thursday evening a man was killed after being hit by an Audi believed to have been stolen during a previous burglary. The driver of the vehicle fled the scene on foot, after the car also crashed into a nearby house.

  1. First glammed-up girls arrive on Ladies Day – Friday 14

    Ladies Day finally arrived on Friday giving the men and women of Aintree the chance to show off some amazing outfits and participate in the Style Awards. ECHO editor Catherine Murphy was one of the judges on the panel, and said that for her outfits didn't have to be over-the-top to get into her good books.

  2. 90-year-old stuns at Aintree – Friday 14

    90 year old Sadie Edwards took her first ever trip to the Aintree Racecourse for the Grand National, and was crowned by many as the unofficial queen of Aintree. Daughter Kathy said: "she said 'I've got to go to Aintree before you know what'. Here she is and that's why we're all here."
