There was traffic chaos on the M57 following two separate crashes.

Police first received a report of a crash at around 5.35am today, which happened on the M57 southbound between junction 3 A526 Seth Powell Way, Stockbridge Village and junction 2 A57 Liverpool Road, Prescot.

Following the crash there was queues to junction 6 in Kirkby. A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said this crash involved one car, a silver BMW and it is unclear if there were any injuries.

Police stopped traffic for around 50 minutes. Another crash on the other side of the motorway (northbound) also occurred around a similar time. The crash happened between junction 1, Tarbock Island to junction 2, Liverpool Road, Prescot.

The crash involved two cars and it was unclear if there were any injuries. Some drivers reported the lanes of the motorway were icy and traffic at a standstill.

Buses were also impacted by the traffic. PeoplesBus said on Twitter: "Due to an ongoing incident on the M57, the driver of the 741 to @SalesianAcademy and @MaghullHighsch struggled to get into work and as a result, the service is now running around 10 minutes late."

North West motorway police warned drivers to "take it easy" on the roads due to ice.

They said: "Morning folks, another cold one over night so take it easy out there and allow extra time for any journeys. Remember if you take extra care walking because of ice, you should be taking extra care driving."

All lanes have since reopened, but traffic management system Inrix states there is still some traffic in the surrounding areas.
