St Helens roads that can stump even the most experienced drivers

Some roads can make even experienced drivers scratch their heads.

From complicated roundabouts to strange lane layouts, it can be easy to mistake while behind the wheel on an unfamiliar passage of road. St Helens is no exception to this rule, so the ECHO looked at some of the most difficult and confusing roads around the borough.

Haydock Island

A major junction on both the M6 motorway and the East Lancs Road, Haydock Island is among the busiest junctions in Merseyside, and navigating it correctly can be a challenge.

According to drivers, this is one of the areas of road they struggle with the most, with the road splitting into a "hamburger" roundabout, with the East Lancs cutting through the middle. Drivers are able to join the M6 northbound or southbound, as well exiting into Newton-le-Willows.

It was originally built in 1934 as a crossroads between the A49 and A580, before becoming a roundabout in about the 1950s.

Andy Taylor said: "People always seem to struggle at Haydock Island."

Another person added: "Haydock Island can get hectic and confusing, it's like an accident waiting to happen at times."

Alder Root bridge

The road approaching a low bridge in Newton-le-Willows has seen its speed limit halved

Alder Root Lane is quite a straightforward road, however it's a low bridge on the route which seems to regularly catch out van drivers, becoming an accident hotspot. Several vans have become stuck after attempting to pass under the bridge.

Previously a national speed limit road, concerns were raised about drivers potentially approaching the bridge at 60mph and colliding with it. Proposals are now in place to change the speed limit to 30mph on the approach.

Beverley Whitehead said: "It’s ridiculous! Thankfully it’s finally being changed!"

"Asda" roundabout

The roundabout near Asda in St Helens town centre was named as one of the most difficult

Close to Asda in the centre of St Helens, this large roundabout linking several different roads can be difficult to navigate at busy times due to the volume of cars on the road. The roundabout joins the busy carriageways of St Helens Linkway, Westfield Street, King Street and Kirkland Street.

The poor condition of the road has also been cited as making driving more difficult. Paul Gravener said: "Asda roundabout, trying to avoid the grand canyon that surrounds the complete circumference and the large sunken manhole."

Gillian Tinsley said: "I have trouble coming out of Westfield Street. The traffic seems to be going too fast from Asda and the road next to it for me to join to go up by Aldi."
