Beloved family dog ‘ripped to shreds’ in front of horrified owner

A woman was "traumatised" after seeing her dog "ripped to pieces" by another pet.

Adelle had just started taking her family dog, Bailey, for a walk on Clint Way in Edge Hill when she saw another dog run out of a home. The dog, which the 41-year-old said looked like an American bulldog, start attacking the 12-year-old Shih Tzu in the street.

Adelle, who did not want to give her surname, said despite trying to halt the dog's attack by grabbing and hitting it, it would not stop "ragging" Bailey. The Shih Tzu was left dead in the middle of the street, but the dog wouldn't not stop attacking the 12-year-old's body.

Adelle, from Edge Hill, told The ECHO: "I take the dog there everyday because it's like our safe place, there's normally only another little Shih Tzu there, it's not like there's any other dogs in the park. We've been walking past and they have obviously just opened the door and let the dog out without checking if the gate was closed.

"The dog has just grabbed on to Bailey and was just ragging him. I was fighting with the dog then trying to get the dog off Bailey but it just went on for ages and ages and ages.

"It was not letting go, after it was over he still wouldn't let go of Bailey and he was just ragging him. I couldn't breath, I just phoned my mum and I shouldn't have because I didn't want her to see her dog being ragged around like that, it's her little boy."

When Adelle's mum came over she was "screaming and crying" while hitting the dog to try and get it off Bailey. She continued: "Me mum's hysterical crying and has ran home and got a golf club and gone to the house where the dog lives and knocked at the door. She had the golf club down, but against the wall, and police opened the door.

"They arrested my mum and put her in a van. Bailey was dead on the floor in little pieces and I just started screaming because I was so upset."

Adelle claims a woman who walked by her in the street said somebody took the dog on the number 10 bus to Huyton before police arrived at the scene. Adelle now wants to let people in the Edge Hill area know about the dog attack and warn others to be vigilant.

She said: "Nobody else can go through this because it's absolutely shocking. My mum is just crying permanently, the house is just not the same and I can't stop thinking about the attack.

"I can't help but think this might not have happened to Bailey if somebody else spoke up. I don't want it to happen to another dog or a child. He was literally ripped to shreds in front of me."

A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: "We can confirm that an investigation is ongoing following a dog attack in Edge Hill in March. At around 3pm on Saturday, March 11, officers were called to Clint Way following the report of a dog-on-dog attack which resulted in the death of a dog.

"A 60-year-old woman was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and affray. She remains on conditional bail pending further enquiries."
