Armed police descended on a street after a suspected gun and ammunition were discovered.

Merseyside Police were called to Fernhill Way in Bootle just after 4pm on Thursday, March 16 following the reported find. A cordon was put in place around a number of houses and garages on the road as officers investigated.

Armed police were seen leaving a home with a large cardboard box marked “police evidence” and forensics were carrying evidence bags.

The area including front gardens, cars and bushes were searched by officers wearing black. They used a ladder to search flat roofs of properties inside the cordoned off area.

Merseyside Police confirmed they have seized a gun and ammunition from the area. The items have been forensically recovered and investigations continue.

A woman in the area told The ECHO the street was “surrounded” when she got home from work.

She said: “I’d just got back from work and saw all of this, all the cars and the tape. They’re looking in one of the houses and people don’t really know what’s happened.

“I hope nobody is hurt or anything. Never seen anything like it.”

Another witness said they looked out their window when they heard lots of movement outside. The man added the area usually has “a lot of people coming and going”.
