Liverpool was covered in a blanket of snow this morning causing dozens of school to close and early morning travel chaos.

Yellow weather warnings were put in place for Merseyside by the Met Office yesterday, with Liverpool City Council, Knowsley, Wirral and Sefton all sending gritters out to treat the region's roads.

People across Merseyside woke up on Friday morning to blankets of snow across the region. By 7am all Merseyrail trains were cancelled, with no rail replacement bus services being put in place and dozens of schools announced they would be closed for the day.

A spoeksperson from Merseyrail said: "Due to significant snowfall overnight across the Liverpool City Region, all services on the Merseyrail network were suspended this morning. We apologise to passengers who are affected by this suspension.

"The Merseyrail network operates by using an electric-powered third rail. When there is snow or ice on the third rail it prevents the trains from picking up power.

"We have also been unable to provide rail-replacement buses due to road conditions. Many bus operators are also suspending and cancelling services due to the weather conditions."

There were also delays at Liverpool John Lennon Airport due to the weather. The city centre looked picturesque as roads, trees and grass were covered in a blanket of snow.

Crosby's iron men also had company as people made snowmen on the beach. Here are 11 of the best pictures of Liverpool in the snow today.
