The Transit van driver stopped at the scene and is assisting police with enquiries. No arrests have been made.

Police have closed the road in both directions between Albany Road and Low Hill in Kensington. At least five police vehicles are currently at the scene along with around half a dozen officers.

One man who passed the scene said he would “say a prayer” for the little boy tonight.

Police are carrying out house-to-house enquiries inside the cordon and are appealing for witnesses to come forward.

A spokesperson from Merseyside Police said: “If you have any information about this incident, contact @MerPolCC or call 101, quoting reference 23000205791.”
