Emergency services rushed to a city road as smoke poured out of the former William Shakespeare pub.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service received a 999 call at 8.16pm on Thursday, March 9 following reports of a fire at the former William Shakespeare Pub on Stanley Road in Kirkdale. Two fire engines arrived at the scene four minutes later and found the three storey building well alight.

Firefighters requested two further fire engines and an aerial platform due to the size of the blaze. Merseyside Police also attended the scene to close Stanley Road, at the junction of Bankhall Street, in both directions while the blaze was brought under control.

Firefighters went into the building wearing breathing apparatus and put out the flames using hose reel jets. By 10pm the blaze was under control, with two fire engines remaining at the scene to dampen down the pub.

Nobody was believed to be inside the pub when emergency services arrived at the scene and no injuries have been reported. Pictures from the scene show the majority of the properties upstairs windows completely open.

An investigation will take place into the cause of the blaze.
