A man was battered with "pieces of wood" in a racially aggravated attack.

Police were called to Latimer Street in Vauxhall on Friday, February 2 at around 4.40pm. Officers received a call that a member of staff at MP Food and Wines was assaulted by two men, who were in possession of weapons, believed to be pieces of wood.

The man sustained head and facial injuries and was taken to hospital. His condition is currently described as stable. A cordon was outside the shop on Saturday, as well as forensic officers and police.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said the suspects are described as white, around 5ft 6in tall, and in their 20s. One was of medium build, clean shaven and with short blonde hair; and the second had a beard and dark hair.

Detective Inspector Neil Dillon said: "We believe that this incident arose from the two suspects attempting to buy items from the shop, which was closed for renovation. Racial abuse was also directed at the victim. This was an unprovoked attack and we are supporting the victim as our enquiries continue.

"If you were near the location and saw this incident, or live or work nearby and have doorbell, CCTV or other footage to assist, please come forward."
