The Princess of Wales’ surgery “came as a surprise” to those close to the royal family, as Sarah Ferguson gives a health update leaving hospital.
Kate was admitted to the London Clinic last Tuesday ahead of planned abdominal surgery and is expected to remain there for between ten to 14 days as she recovers.
And according to PEOPLE magazine, the news of Kate’s hospitalisation came as a surprise to family friends and even those who work closely with the royals, with “no indication that anything was wrong”.
It comes as Sarah Ferguson gave a health update while leaving a London hospital on Wednesday just days after she revealed she had been diagnosed with skin cancer.
The Duchess of York visited her dermatologist at the King William VII hospital in Marylebone and according to The Mirror, told people outside: “I’m fine, thank you.”
The 64-year-old took to Instagram on Monday to give her thanks to those rallying around her and wrote: “Naturally another cancer diagnosis has been a shock but I’m in good spirits and grateful for the many messages of love and support.”

Queen tells King to ‘slow down’
The King has cancelled engagements ready for his corrective procedure in hospital this week, with the Queen urging her workaholic husband to take it easy.
An insider told The Sun: “The Queen has told him he needs to slow down a bit.”
Meanwhile, Kate was last week said to be “doing well”, with William spending time at her bedside.
She is not expected to return to official duties until after Easter.

What are the royal plans today?
As the Princess of Wales and the King remain out of action due to respective health conditions, other members of the royal family are continuing royal engagements and visits.
According to the official royal diary, Princess Anne will attend several engagements in Norfolk today, including a visit to HM Prison Norwich, opening Norfolk Schools Sailing Association and visiting Cromer station.
Sophie, the Duchess of Edinburgh will also be hosting a dinner at St James’s Palace.

Sophie gives nod to King on royal visit
The Duchess of Edinburgh gave a nod to the King, who is preparing to undergo prostate treatment, as she carries on with royal duties.
Sophie visited Harris Girls’ Academy in East Dulwich, south London, on Wednesday to call for tampons and sanitary pads to be kept “out of the closet” in an effort to end the taboo over menstrual health.
Royal fans noted that the 59-year-old wore her Prince of Wales Highgrove Heritage scarf, which has been gifted to several royals by the King.
One person wrote on X: “And here is Sophie wearing the Prince of Wales Highgrove Heritage Scarf.”
The scarf retails on the Highgrove Gardens website for £115 and is made with sustainably sourced 100% ultrafine RWS (Responsible Wool Standard) merino wool from Australia with complete traceability.
Charles and the Princess of Wales have both been forced to halt their royal engagements as they battle their respective health scares – prompting other members of the family to step up.
The Queen has continued her visits and Princess Anne held an investiture on Wednesday at Windsor Castle.

Princess Anne held an investiture on Wednesday as the King prepares to undergo treatment for his enlarged prostate.
Public figures including director Sir Stephen Frears and wheelchair rugby coach Tom Coyd were awarded knighthoods and MBEs at the ceremony at Windsor Castle.
With the King due to be treated in hospital this week for an enlarged prostate, and the Prince and Princess of Wales also away from their regular duties after Kate’s abdominal surgery, the Princess Royal conducted Wednesday’s investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle.
Sir Stephen, whose film The Queen won Dame Helen Mirren an Oscar for playing Elizabeth II in 2006, put his knighthood down to “just being lucky”.
After collecting his honour for services to film and television on Wednesday, Sir Stephen said: “It is a really nice thing. I have no complaints.
“I have been very, very lucky and you still need an enormous amount of luck. I have been very, very lucky in my choice of material and the people I have worked with.”
Sir Stephen added: “It has been a nice day and now we will go have tea.”

Sophie calls for period products to be kept ‘out of the closet’ to end taboo
The Duchess of Edinburgh has called for tampons and sanitary pads to be kept “out of the closet” to end the taboo over menstrual health.
Sophie, who is carrying on with royal duties amid the royal health crisis, visited Harris Girls’ Academy in East Dulwich, south London, on Wednesday.
The duchess chatted to guests about her own experiences of heavy periods and being worried about tampons falling out of her handbag on official royal engagements.
The duchess said: “The number of times I’ve been on an engagement and I’ve left my bag and a little child has picked my bag up and if they drop things on the floor and all of sudden a tampon rolls out across the floor…OK.”
The duchess called for period products to be on display at home rather than locked away, adding: “A lot of the companies that make these products whether they be pads or tampons try to make them quite attractive.
“And then what do we do with it?… Hidden in the cupboard.”
She added: “We need to bring them, get the products out of the closet.. because actually that is going to create another part of the conversation.
“If your six-year-old little sister picks up one of these and goes ‘what’s this for?’ Then you can have the conversation at home.”

Sarah Ferguson has given a health update while leaving a hospital in London just days after she revealed she was diagnosed with skin cancer.

The Duke of Edinburgh has encountered the world’s oldest living land animal – Jonathan the 191-year-old giant tortoise.
Edward crouched down to meet Jonathan as the tortoise stretched his neck to take a closer look at the visiting royal on the remote South Atlantic island of St Helena.
Such is Jonathan’s age that he also met the duke’s late mother Princess Elizabeth, later Queen Elizabeth II, and grandparents King George VI and Queen Elizabeth, later the Queen Mother, in 1947 when he was 115 years old.
