Cheapest places to buy fuel in the region

These are the cheapest places in the Liverpool City Region to fill up your car with petrol.

According to the latest data supplied by retailers, a driver in an average family car could save up to £14.41 by filling up at a Asda garage in Halton compared to the most expensive petrol station. The Asda garage at Widnes Road, Halton is charging motorists 132.7p per litre, which means it would cost £72.99 to fill up an average 55 litre tank.

This is based on a new feed of live petrol prices which was set up by the government's Competition and Markets Authority in September. The average price for a litre of petrol across the Merseyside region this week is 136.9p.

The most expensive filling station in Merseyside is a Shell station at East Lancs Road, St. Helens. The cost of standard petrol at this station is 158.9p, meaning it would cost a total of £87.40 to fill up an average family car at this forecourt.

For the owners of diesel cars, the cheapest place to fill up is the Asda garage at Knowsley. The cost of a litre of standard diesel at this forecourt was 141.7p, according to prices supplied by retailers.

UK drivers are currently paying 142.4p per litre of petrol, while people who own diesel vehicles are forking out 150.8p on average. Nationally prices have fallen since they reached an all-time high in July 2022 of 191.55p for petrol and 199.22 for diesel but have been heading upwards again in recent weeks.
In Merseyside owners of petrol cars are currently being charged 2.9p less than the national average of 142.4p. Diesel car drivers in Merseyside are paying 3.0p less than the national average.
The cheapest place to buy petrol in the country is at a Sainsbury's garage in Wiltshire where a litre of standard petrol is 130.9p. The most expensive petrol station in the country is a Shell garage in Elmbridge where motorists are charged 182.9p a litre.
The prices quoted are for standard grade petrol (E10) and for standard grade diesel (B7). The figures are supplied by the major retailers under a voluntary scheme launched by the Competition and Markets Authority to ensure motorists are given a fair deal at the petrol pumps.

Most of the major petrol retailers have signed up to the scheme and the petrol stations supplying up-to-date information account for around 60% of the fuel sold in the UK. The prices quoted are those supplied by retailers as of Friday, January 19, 2024 at 4:45am.
