Tiny item most people throw away that stops cars from freezing

Liverpool experienced its first snowfall of the year this week but more wintry conditions are on their way.

The forecasters have warned Storm Isha will bring a spell of heavy winds, and disruption to travel and utilities is likely. As there's no end in sight to the freezing temperatures, it is time to start thinking of ways to overcome soon-to-be daily hazards.

Most frustratingly, dealing with a frozen car every morning can stop drivers in their tracks. Pouring boiling water over your windshield is a quick, but potentially dangerous, risk and won't help the inside if it too has been affected.

The reason you are seeing the inside of your windscreen freeze is due to humidity in the car. High humidity in the vehicle, mixed with a cold surface caused by outside temperatures, will likely lead to a frozen windscreen. When warm, moist air comes into contact with the glass, condensation forms and then freezes.

Luckily, there's a quick, cheap and potentially free trick to prevent the issue. Aside from keeping the car ventilated by opening windows slightly, an unrealistic fix given the weather, you can absorb moisture with a palm-sized item you've probably thrown away numerous times.

Silica gel and beads can be left in cup holders and side pockets in the vehicle that will absorb moisture – the same beads are often found in packages and deliveries.

Best of all, they can be purchased in bulk and in individual packets on Amazon for as low as £3.95. You can see a range of silica beads and gels here. They're a great option not just for cars but anywhere where water builds up and mould commonly appears.

To preemptively rid yourself of a frozen outer windshield, WD-40 pulls double duty by preventing snow and ice from sitting almost anywhere. Amazon also stocks the spray for as low as £2.20, beating typical retail prices by almost £4.
