There has been disruption across Merseyside this morning as weather warnings have been put in place by the Met Office.

Snow and hail hit the region overnight, leading to difficult conditions on Tuesday, January 16. Merseyrail confirmed that their first services were cancelled, as a cold weather plan was put in place.

A spokesperson said: "The 75 miles of track on the Merseyrail network will be treated to protect them from ice build-up, however the wet weather conditions forecasted can wash the treatment off the rails causing them to freeze.

"Due to this, the first services of the day on each line will run without passengers. Ice on the third rail can cause trains to become stranded, so trains will run empty to ensure routes are clear and that peak time services have the best chance of running normally."

Roads are also closed with officers warning drivers to avoid certain areas of the city. Mount Vernon Road Eastbound is closed and there's heavy traffic around the area due to ice from A580 Low Hill to Marmaduke Street.

Vehicle are struggling to get up the hill so police have had to close the road for safety. A spokesperson for Merseyside police has said: "Please be advised the junction of Everton Valley and St Domingo Road we have reports of adverse driving conditions – Please avoid the area and find an alternative route. Please take care whilst on the road."

School closures are also expected, with Gateacre school already announcing it's not opening today. A spokesperson said: "Due to the hazardous weather conditions, school will be closed today."
