Dad claims he’s been forced out of home due to damp and mould

A dad claims he has been forced out of his own home due to ongoing damp and mould problems.

Stephen Melia, of Craine Close in Anfield, said his home has been plagued with mould and damp since June last year.

He told the ECHO there has been a "catalogue of errors" and the issue has become so bad, he worries for his health. Stephen is currently staying with friends where he can and says his daughter no longer wants to stay of a weekend due to the problems.

He said: "The mould was growing on the walls it was getting so bad.

"I work full time and they were sending workers out during the day despite agreeing to evening or weekend appointments. I had someone out on January 2 and they raised an order, but I was told there's a target date of March 11, it's not good enough."

Stephen said the property is also due an electrical safety check and repair work to a leaking roof is desperately needed. He added: "I've had to move out until the repair work is done.

Stephen said the problem has been ongoing since June 2023

"My home is at risk. They sent a decorator out to clean the walls and the plaster was falling off.

"He scrubbed all the fungi off but when I plugged in my phone charger I got an electric shock, it's dangerous so I stay with friends where I can.

"Water was coming through the inside of the property and the housing said they'd send a roofer but there were problems getting a key to them, this happened several times and the work hasn't been done.

"This is my home but I'm being passed pillar to post. My 15-year-old daughter doesn't want to spend time with me because she doesn't want to stay so it's fracturing my relationship too.

"I can't keep knocking on friends and family's door, I'm staying out where I can and having to stay at home the odd days, it's not right."

Torus Group Assets Director Margaret Goddard said: “Nothing is more important to us at Torus than making sure tenants and their families live in a decent, safe, and secure home.

“In this case, whilst we have worked to accommodate the tenant with weekend and evening appointments, we have on a significant number of occasions been unable to undertake essential electrical tests and some repair works because of access problems.

“Follow the report of damp and mould, we carried out a fungicidal wash to tackle existing mould inside the property, necessary roof repairs have been completed and repairs, including to the external brickwork have been scheduled.

“A surveyor visited on 2 January 2024 to identify any outstanding areas of concern and arrange for works to be completed. He confirmed that the tenant’s home is safe and habitable. The faulty electrical socket was disconnected and there was no indication of mould re-growth.

“We will always do our best to accommodate requests around timings for home visits and will continue to work with the tenant to gain access to carry out the required electrical tests.

“We encourage all our customers to allow access so that Torus teams can undertake pre-arranged home visits. This ensures we can complete essential works to keep homes decent and safe.”
